Found: Endemic to the island of Kaua‘i

Population Estimate as of 2024: 8,000 (decreasing)

IUCN Status: Endangered

About: The smallest of the extant honeycreepers the little yellow 'anianiau is a nectivorous bird endemic to Kaua'i. Weighing as much as four pennies (or two nickels) it can be distinguished from other honeycreepers by its small size and lack of black lores (the area between eye and beak).

Once common in lowland forests of Kaua'i it is now restricted to higher elevation habitats and at risk of decline from avian malaria.

PC:  Graham Talaber

The most distinctive call is a 'tew-weet' or a 'see-u-weet.' Its song is a lively, sweet high-pitched trill.

'Anianiau are socially monogamous with both sexes caring for the young.
